Sports provide an everyman's opportunity to explain statistical analysis, and the rejuvenated NJIT Data Science Club is all-in.

The club already has more than a dozen members and is led by action-hungry graduate students Jake Byford and Parth Patel, president and vice president respectively, who both stepped up when most members of the previous Machine Learning Club graduated last year.

The ACM has announced NJIT Distinguished Professor David Bader in its new class of Fellows.

Bader received the honor along with 70 peers in the computing industry, representing just 1% of Association for Computing Machinery membership.

"The contributions of the 2021 Fellows run the gamut of the computing field — including cloud database systems, deep learning acceleration, high performance computing, robotics, and theoretical computer science," ACM President Gabriele Kotsis stated.

Twitter was a strategic tool for Taliban operations in overthrowing the Afghanistan leadership during the country’s civil war, and some accounts associated with the oppressive group triggered the company's algorithms to promote ads for well-known Western brands, researchers from New Jersey Institute of Technology, Princeton University and University of Regina found.

The world is at Samuel Carlos’ fingertips. Since coming NJIT’s Albert Dorman Honors College out of high school with an associates degree in math and computer science, he’s interned at Amazon, Google, and Facebook. He’s since added a third major - history with a focus on the history of computer science and is now planning to study Mandarin and Southeast Asian technology and politics at National Taiwan University in the spring and summer of 2022.

A new course about the history of information systems will be offered by Ying Wu College of Computing this spring, where students will learn about everything from calculation methods of ancient and medieval times, through early visions of mechanical computer architecture in the Industrial Age, straight through to the pioneers of 20th-century solid-state electronics and digital networks.
