Veterans who wear prosthetic lower legs could experience healthier and more comfortable lifestyles following novel artificial intelligence research at New Jersey Institute of Technology, in conjunction with the Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
Every year, NJIT’s detachment of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps graduates several successful cadets into the military officer ranks. Three members of the Class of 2025 spoke about their backgrounds that led them to the program, experiences during their time as Highlanders and future plans.
The young men who will soon receive their commissions as second lieutenants are Fredy Aleman Jr., a computer engineering major from Elizabeth; Irvin Hoyos, an architecture major from Paterson; and Michael Ruzzi, an industrial engineering major from Trenton.
Suraj Ghumwala will soon be the first cadet from NJIT's ROTC detachment commissioned into the U.S. Space Force.
The computer engineering major from Rochelle Park said his childhood dream was to be an astronaut, and as the first person in his family born in the U.S. he felt a sense of service to the community, influenced by friends who also joined the military.

On this Veterans Day, I write to thank NJIT’s veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces for their service to our nation, and to ask the entire NJIT campus community to join me in recognizing their service and sacrifice.
Monuel M. Aulov, Associate Director of Research for Ying Wu College of Computing, was a 21-year-old U.S. Marine Corporal at the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001. As the anniversary of the attack approaches, he reflects on that day, his immediate realization that “we were going to war” and the end of that conflict 20 years later.
Q: What were you doing on the morning of Sept. 11?
After four years at NJIT, career prospects for Jaime Felice ’21 are about to take off, and the sky is the limit — literally.
Felice has definitely taken a path less traveled at NJIT, joining four other cadets this year in the graduating class of NJIT’s decorated Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AFROTC) Detachment 490. In just a few weeks after Commencement, she’ll be commissioning as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, and has been selected to become a pilot.
Three student veterans at NJIT were among the first to be awarded a new scholarship administered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. The Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship, named for the long-serving Massachusetts congresswoman and steadfast advocate for veterans, provides up to nine months of additional post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, up to $30,000. Recipients must be enrolled in a STEM degree program or seeking a teaching certificate.
