Elizabeth Spencer ’21 is an industrial design major, member of Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and the current events coordinator for the student run chapter. Spencer was also the first non-architecture student in the role of technical manager with AIAS architecture group who manages the 3D printing lab. As Spencer recounts, “I’ve always loved 3D printing – I have a mini 3D printer and wanted to learn more so I met the person who was the president of AIAS at the coffee shop Mike Chappa.

Hillier College architecture students in Christopher Gardner’s studio spent last semester applying their design skills to figuring out how to address climate action through building codes, with the codes themselves as the object of design. The students were asked to write a code or code addenda to be instituted in a jurisdiction of their choice and then trace the outcomes of that code's implementation through a set of 'visions' addressing various scales and time frame
Daniel Meza, Albert Dormans honors scholar, industrial design alum ‘20 and Fulbright scholarship recipient, has some advice for the current cohort of industrial design students. “There are a lot more opportunities for research and innovation in industrial design than you might think. For the first three years of my program it had not been on my radar that research is viable and something that you can make happen at NJIT.”
The Spring 2021 "Shaping the Future of Cities” studio is being taught by Roger Smith, design director at Gensler. The challenge for students is to re-imagine the American City and explore the possibilities for developing 21st century models for building an equitable future. The events of 2020 have highlighted a broad spectrum of persistent racial injustices and inequalities that have long plagued America and its cities.
NJIT's interior design program has new opportunities for students to learn career, leadership and life skills from alumni mentors, as its graduate population that started with the original class of 2012 expands, enters higher levels of their field and looks to give back.
The idea evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic from alumnae Alma Villalba and Pamela Ospina, who in their current jobs observed colleagues from other universities serving as mentors and saw the potential for their own alma mater.
The book, Collaborations Vol. 1, by APEX Collective, includes works of art, particularly painting collaborations, created from 2014-2020 by various artists that were exhibited in a multitude of art galleries, including the Ryan Joseph Gallery in Denver, Knew Conscious Gallery also in Denver, Alex Grey's Chapel of Sacred Mirrors in New York, the Philadelphia VisionaryArts Gallery and many more.
