As the great improv comic Robin Williams once said, “You’re only given one little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.” Newark audiences were in for plenty of unique and entertaining moments, sparked with that little bit of madness, during the city’s annual celebration of improv theater.
It’s here! Feb. 17-21 marks the annual Student Appreciation Week at NJIT. Dozens of activities, giveaways and events will take place across campus as part of the 2020 celebration.
Here, many of NJIT’s schools, centers, offices and programs express their appreciation for the students of NJIT.

Patrycja Ptak, a second-year architecture student at NJIT’s Hillier College of Architecture and Design, vividly recalls the uncertainty she felt and challenges she faced navigating the college pathway — which is why she decided to become a mentor through Strive for College, an online platform that provides resources and support to aspiring and current first-generation college students, and with which NJIT is a strategic partner.
For the 14th year in a row, NJIT will host the New Jersey Science Olympiad (NJSO). The university expects upward of 700 middle and high school students on campus Jan. 6, 2020, (snow date Jan. 13) for the event, which is part of a national science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) competition. Participants must possess both strong academic achievements and a great interest in the STEM fields.
Where were you the night of Nov. 26th?
Anyone exiting the Summit Street parking garage that evening would have most certainly been counted among the witnesses to a brightly-lit, taped-off scene surrounding a faded-white ’98 Chevy Lumina where an investigation was underway — carried out by a special unit of NJIT’s own CSI students-in-training.
The call was put out to NJIT’s Albert Dorman Honors College (ADHC) this past spring and nine Dorman Scholars answered it. Their charge was to design and construct a tap-dance board for a handi-capable wheelchair user — a patient at Mount Sinai Health System in Manhattan who would be participating along with able-bodied dancers in the inaugural performance of the nonprofit, all-abilities dance troupe, Tap: On Tap. The performance was held at the hospital Oct.
Employment is becoming increasingly skills-focused. Indeed, the abilities to communicate effectively, problem-solve and quickly learn and apply new technologies, for instance, are proving to be of the utmost importance for landing jobs and nurturing early careers.
Equipped with shovels and spades, and tape measures and topsoil, first-year Dorman Scholars gathered behind Albert Dorman Honors College (ADHC) on a sunny weekend morning in early October to plant a variety of native species: New Jersey tea, blazing star, New England aster, lady fern, butterfly milkweed and coneflower. They were beautifying the ADHC grounds to be sure, but more importantly, they were continuing a project started by last year’s first-years to increase biodiversity on the NJIT campus.
Oct. 9, 2019 – New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has announced it is now offering a new way for students to connect with scholarship opportunities through the launch of ScholarshipUniverse — a “state-of-the-art digital scholarship-matching system aimed toward maximizing funding for students.”
It was a timely inspiration that garnered two Honors College students a first-place hackathon win.
