Dear Highlanders,

In recent days, I have seen tensions rise on many college campuses, which causes me great concern. As a university and as a community, we must remain committed to civil discourse and respectful disagreement with one another, regardless of our beliefs or opinions. Violence in any form is unacceptable and should not be tolerated. As a university, we believe in the power of our students, alumni, faculty and staff to positively transform our world, so I implore all Highlanders to listen earnestly and treat one another compassionately during this difficult time.

Dear Highlanders,

We have been witnessing a tragedy in Israel, Gaza, and beyond following heinous acts of terror that included unconscionable violence and the degradation of innocent people, and which have resulted in the loss of thousands of human lives. I mourn those who have died and offer my sympathy to their families, friends, and loved ones, while understanding that, at times like these, words and gestures feel profoundly inadequate.

Dear Highlanders,

NJIT is proud to observe Juneteenth, a federal and state holiday that commemorates the day (June 19, 1865) when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and declared that enslaved Black people in Texas were free, which officially ended slavery in the United States more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This historic occasion should serve as a poignant reminder that the pursuit of equity for all does not come easily or swiftly, in many cases, and must continue.

Dear Highlanders,

Today begins Pride Month throughout the United States and across much of the globe. This is a time during which we intentionally reflect on and celebrate the impact and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community, both on campus and around the world. It also is a time to advocate for the elimination of injustices and inequalities that remain today.

Dear Highlanders,

On this Memorial Day, as many of us gather with family and friends, let us also take time to honor those who have sacrificed their lives while serving in the United States military. That is the purpose of this holiday, and I would like to extend my unwavering gratitude to NJIT’s veterans and current members of the Armed Forces for their service, their courage, and their selflessness.
