Leah-Marie Boake, Industrial Design ’26, and Albert Dorman Honor's College student, is distinguishing herself and the Industrial Design program at Hillier College with a nearly 12-month run of awards and recognitions.
Gabriel Rapoport’s journey into industrial design began long before he knew the field had a name. From a young age, he was curious about how everyday objects were designed, constructed and refined to improve life.
That childhood fascination evolved into a drive to become one of the creators shaping that world. Now, as he prepares to graduate from NJIT’s Hillier College of Architecture and Design, Rapoport reflects on a college experience marked by resilience, creativity and growth.
Students from Albert Dorman Honors College’s courses – Introduction to Research Writing, Introduction to Research Methods, Introduction to Entrepreneurship and Science, Technology and Urban Transformation – presented their semester's research during the fourth Honors Interdisciplinary Research Forum, with topics ranging from housing affordability crisis in New Jersey to an analysis of cartographical and textual evidence of Pope Joan.
NJIT’s Hillier College of Architecture and Design (HCAD) hosted its Design Showcase, the college’s flagship fundraising and networking event, which provides a chance for members of the Hillier College community to connect and discuss the exhibited work done by HCAD’s architecture and design students over the past year. This year’s event took place in the Jewel Box of One Gateway Center in downtown Newark, a flagship space in Gateway’s $50 million investment plan.
Students at NJIT’s Hillier College of Architecture and Design showcased their work in the Newark Zine Fest, organized by Petia Morozov, Newark Design Collaborative fellow and publisher of Dense Magazine, was held at the Newark Art Museum. Zines, short for "magazines" or "fanzines," are typically small-batch, self-published works that emphasize unique, personal or niche perspectives.
After a national search, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) found the best person to lead its Hillier College of Architecture and Design (HCAD) right on campus. Interim Dean Gabrielle Esperdy, a noted architectural historian, has been appointed dean, effective July 1.
Esperdy will be steering the execution of HCAD’s strategic plan in close partnership with other colleges as they strive toward NJIT’s goal of becoming a nexus of innovation.

A little-known R&D facility, operated by NJIT’s New Jersey Innovation Institute with the U.S. Army Picatinny Arsenal for its primary client, is beginning to thrive one year after moving off-campus.
The facility is called COMET — Collaborative Operationalized Manufacturing Engineering and Training — located about 30 miles northwest of NJIT’s Newark campus, close to Picatinny, which is the Army headquarters for conventional weapons development.
When Matthew Negron ’13, ‘16 started his education at NJIT, he was among the earliest cohorts to join the newly-formed industrial design program at Hillier College of Architecture and Design.
