Amid growing demand for licensed engineers and new infrastructure investment, NJIT is partnering with industry to make graduate education more accessible for working professionals — offering firms a way to upskill their engineers while expanding the state’s talent pipeline.

When Saly Tanyous ’26 walks across the stage at NJIT this spring, she won’t just be accepting her degree, she’ll be celebrating a journey marked by resilience, discovery and the courage to find her true path in engineering.

Born in Egypt, Tanyous moved to the United States in sixth grade and settled in Jersey City with her family. The transition was difficult. As a child who excelled in her Egyptian classrooms, she was suddenly navigating a new culture, a new language and the fear of falling short. “I used to cry every day, worried about failing,” she recalled. 

Nearly half of adolescents and young adults with lingering symptoms of concussion suffer from eye coordination disorders that cause double and blurred vision, headaches and difficulties concentrating. 

“These conditions make it hard to read books, work on a computer or even use a smartphone, and the impact on cognition and learning can be severe. They also delay the return to sports, work and driving for young people,” said Tara Alvarez, a distinguished professor of biomedical engineering at NJIT.

When the vessel “King Gizzard” lined up for the final round of NJIT’s STEM Success Academy boat race, the stakes weren’t high in the traditional sense — just a stream of air and a small plastic boat floating on a narrow water track in NJIT’s Makerspace. But what was at play was far bigger: creativity, collaboration and the confidence to think differently.

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) earned the second-highest rating in Money’s 2025 list of the best universities in the U.S.

At 4 ½ stars, NJIT is tied for the highest rated public institution and trails only Princeton University in New Jersey. NJIT is also featured in Money’s national list of the Best Public Colleges.

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has strengthened its position in online education, with three online graduate programs now ranking in U.S. News & World Report's Top 100 for 2025, up from two last year.

Notably, NJIT's online master's in business (non-MBA) program jumped 35 places to No. 74 in the latest national rankings, released this week by U.S. News & World Report.
