Just two months after earning a bachelor’s at New Jersey Institute of Technology, Lorraine Nunes '20 landed her first big job, as a software architect analyst at Accenture.
“It is an unusual graduation, but what is extraordinary always is the work of this class,” said U.S. Sen. Cory Booker HON ’09, who began NJIT’s 104th Commencement with a pre-ceremony heartfelt greeting thanking the university’s 2020 graduates for their grit, hard work, sacrifice and struggle, and for epitomizing what “Jersey Strong” is all about.
Exploring remote, exotic locations is a long-standing tradition among college students. For applied physics major Samantha Lomuscio ’20, that destination during her senior year has been Jupiter, nearly 390 million miles away.
Working with astrophysicists at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), where she began conducting high-energy astrophysics research last summer, her goal has been to detect the solar system’s largest planet in a way that has never been done successfully — through gamma-ray emissions.
Since the end of March, Rukayat Balogun has been working remotely for Facebook as a site logistics analyst, overseeing staff that maintain the servers and the facility, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. She will move to the Atlanta area in July for this position, which came her way last fall when a fellow student in NJIT’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) introduced Balogun to a visiting Facebook recruiter. The company flew her down south for what turned out to be a series of video interviews, followed by a bit of a wait.
Chemistry student and Albert Dorman Honors Scholar Mary McGuinness will graduate this semester and will continue her academic career as a master's student at University of Connecticut studying oceanography. Congratulations, Mary!
Each spring around Commencement, NJIT’s College of Science and Liberal Arts holds its very own celebration, awarding its standout student and faculty stars from across the college’s diverse academic spectrum of art, history and humanities to physics, biology and chemistry.
While Martin Tuchman School of Management ’s faculty, staff and students and their families could not gather traditionally this year for MTSM’s annual awards ceremony, the event, held virtually May 19, still emanated great pride in and affection for the school’s 2020 graduates. Like most other end-of-school-year celebrations worldwide, it was conducted online due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As a kid growing up in Omaha, Neb., Chloe Jelley ’20 had a major aversion to insects that many can relate with.
“I was one of the more careful kids and I was not into bugs at all when I was young … actually, I was really afraid of all bugs,” recalled Jelley.
