In just three years, Marina Arrese ’21 earned a bachelor’s in business administration at New Jersey Institute of Technology, even while fencing, serving as co-president of the NJIT Investment Fund, working at the campus Financial Analysis Lab and serving on the Dean’s Executive Student Leadership Council. The Madrid native reflected on the chock-full experience and shared her future plans (hint: she’s staying in Newark) in an interview with NJIT.

In mid-June, NJIT joined the America East conference, a 10-team league now including schools from New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. But as a Division I program for more than a decade already, the university has achieved many athletic triumphs. Here, in this fifth of a six-part series looking back at the past few summers, we highlight just a few. Click the headlines below.

Lenny Kaplan, who has headed New Jersey Institute of Technology's division of physical education and athletics since August 2000, has been promoted to the new title of associate vice president/director of athletics.

Kaplan has been instrumental in guiding the program's growth, first at the NCAA Division II level and, since late 2002, in its successful reclassification to NCAA Division I.

Sophomore Alvaro Gimeno has been selected Sports Import/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Player of the Week the organization announced on Tuesday.

In a 2-0 week for the Highlanders, Gimeno averaged 5.17kps, combining for a .490 hitting percentage and totaling 39.5 points.

The 6-foot-9 outside hitter notched seven service aces in the week as NJIT combined for 22 in a pair of victories over Sacred Heart and Harvard.

The NJIT Highlanders' record-setting 2018-19 season came to a close on March 28, 2019, in the CIT Quarterfinals.

Head Coach Brian Kennedy's team finished in fifth place of the ASUN Conference with a 22-13 (8-8 ASUN) record, the third-best overall record in the conference. Kennedy's overall record in three seasons as NJIT's head coach improves to 47-49 (.490) and 117-105 (.527) in his seven seasons as a member of the Highlanders' coaching staff.

Senior Abdul Lewis posted team-highs in points (17) and rebounds (10) as NJIT held off Drexel University, 70-67, on Wednesday at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Highlanders have now started 4-0 on the road for the first time in 30 years -- since a 7-0 road mark to open 1988-89.

In a game NJIT controlled for a majority of the time (33:19), the outcome was not determined until the final buzzer.
