The London Design Biennale 2018 Medal for the most outstanding overall contribution has been awarded to architectural historian and NJIT alumnus Mohamed Elshahed ’05, who curated “Modernist Indignation,” an Egyptian installation that pays homage to Al Emara, the first Arabic-language design magazine focused on contemporary architecture in Egypt, from 1939 to 1959, and its founder, architect Sayed Karim.

“Of course, NJIT will always have a special place in my heart as the institution that provided the foundation that continues to inspire me today,” noted James Stamatis ’85, chief executive officer of Louis Berger, a full-service engineering, architecture, planning, environmental, program and construction management and economic development firm based in Morristown, N.J.

How well do you know your whereabouts? Better yet, how does one get acquainted with a new location when traveling or relocating?

A team of researchers at NJIT has created a place-based artificial intelligence project that helps denizens expand their knowledge of the city of Istanbul.

“[AI]stanbul has been designed as a curious machine that aims to be a virtual native,” explains the [AI]stanbul team about the installation on display at the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, Sept. 22 – Nov 4.

Every year, we go through the ritual of rounding up some of the newest members of our student body: astute first-year students, who are critical thinkers in pursuit of a dynamic intellectual environment and insightful instruction.

And every year, even as the average overall SAT score of our incoming class (1287) and undergraduate enrollment (1,296 freshmen selected out of 8,126 applications) continue to soar, we marvel at all the ways these gung-ho boundary-pushers descend on campus with a clear vision for their future, ready to take ownership of their education.

The design bug bit her while accompanying Topy on a site visit. After graduating from the University of Santo Tomas in 2007 with a B.S. in architecture, she acquired a full-time position at TVAP, working under the supervision of a project architect.

The faculty at the College of Architecture and Design (CoAD) continues to foster insightful discussion and riveting commentary in and out of the classroom.

Senior University Lecturer Rima Taher’s textbook "Building Design for Wind Forces,” which was published by McGraw Hill Education, explores the oft-overlooked yet critically important subject of designing and constructing structures that can withstand wind forces and better resist extreme wind events, such as hurricanes and tornadoes.

Thirty-seven students from the College of Architecture and Design had their work shown in the double-curated Faculty Submitted Student Work Exhibit at SIGGRAPH 2018, an annual conference on computer graphics and interactive techniques convened by the Association of Computing Machinery, in Vancouver, Aug. 12 -16.

According to a 2018 snapshot of graduate education in New Jersey, from the Council of Graduate Schools, more than 45,000 students were enrolled in graduate study, over 17,000 of whom were in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). At NJIT, 25 percent of the university’s student population is pursuing graduate degrees in a variety of academic disciplines. In fact, NJIT offers some 50 master’s programs (including online programs), 19 Ph.D.
