Isabella Gil ’24 always tries to take advantage of every opportunity that comes her way. After leaving her native Venezuela, she came to the United States and looked for different ways to integrate into her new community. Getting to NJIT required a lot of effort, but now that she is here, she feels proud of her achievements and all that’s ahead of her.

Architecture has always interested her as a profession, as well as graphic design, interior design and fashion design.

LoriAnne Jones ’06 developed her architecture interest very early on, as she accompanied her father to work sites. Later, she would find out that her grandmother practiced architecture back in her parents’ home country, Guyana. She was happy to realize that her grandmother was an architect, and was equally proud that she developed interest in architecture without knowing that part of the family story.

Two NJIT undergrads and an alumnus have landed prestigious awards from the New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists (NJ-SPJ) for their outstanding contributions to the university’s student newspaper, The Vector.

There’s a reason the daylight-filled corner office is a coveted prize for corporate achievers.

“A view from a window has a positive impact on emotions, cognitive performance and thermal comfort,” asserts Won Hee Ko, an assistant professor of architecture. Through experimentation, she seeks to quantify the benefits windows provide and to optimize the amount and quality of natural light that people receive throughout the day.

Athens is dense, dry and prone to drought. Together, rising temperatures, a lack of trees and intense heat island effects are baking the modern metropolis of more than three million people. Researchers think a nearly 2,000-year-old answer to the city’s problems may lie beneath its streets.

It all started in sixth grade. Nikole Marin ’23 needed to select what she wanted to study for a class and because she didn’t want to go through the long list of choices, she selected among the first ones in the “A” section. Ultimately, that quick selection has led her to achieving two degrees from NJIT – Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Science in Architecture.

“I love working with building blocks, I love to draw, I love to design and create spaces ever since I was a little girl,” said Marin. “So I decided that I wanted to pursue that from the sixth grade.”

The Hillier College of Architecture and Design (HCAD) kicked off its year-long celebration of two very important milestones – the 50th year anniversary of the New Jersey School of Architecture and the 15th anniversary of the School of Art & Design.

The Design Showcase is the college’s flagship fundraising and networking event, which provides a chance for members of the Hillier College community to connect personally and professionally. This year’s event took place in the Jewel Box of One Gateway Center in downtown Newark, made possible by Onyx Equities.

Melissa Nieves ’19 is the recipient of the American Institute of Architects New Jersey 2022 Service Award. Nieves, associate architect for The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, earned her master’s in architecture with a concentration in infrastructure planning.

“Melissa has had the pleasure of becoming a leader and mentor inside and outside her workplace. She embodies what it means to be an advocate and representative for diversity and mentorship within the profession.” said the AIA.

Taro Narahara, associate professor at the Hillier College of Architecture and Design, won a National Science Foundation I-Corps award for the development of flexible and intuitive design tools for multifamily residential housing.

This project proposes a platform for users to visually study possible housing complex designs and their potential performance in energy use intensity, environmental and some financial criteria based on preliminary sketches drawn by users.
